When devastating circumstances happen, like the wildfires in California, it’s easy for some to claim these events are God's judgment against sin. But Scripture tells a different story. Sin, all sin, was judged and condemned at the cross, once and for all, and Jesus bore the full weight of it. When it comes to sin, God is not sending disaster, because He sent His Son.
Though natural disasters, disease, and dysfunction are consequences of a fallen world, they are not God's doing. Rather, He is our great Comforter, working all things together for good, and loving us through even the most difficult of circumstances (Romans 8:28). While we may wrestle with the tension of a good God allowing these things, we are to know this: His goodness remains steadfast as He weaves every circumstance, even the painful ones, into the fabric of His love and grace.
God is sovereign, but sovereignty doesn't mean He causes everything. Instead, He redeems, restores, and reassures us of His presence, using life's trials to reveal His enduring love and goodness.
No matter what fire you’re facing, know this: God is not the source of your pain, but He is your refuge in it. His love is not diminished by life’s difficulties; rather, He uses them to reveal more of His goodness. The same God who walks with us in green pastures also carries us through the fiery trials. His love never fails.
Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
